SKETCHBOOK

LANDSCAPE FRAGRANCE

MY INTEREST IN SCENT IS NOT BORN OF A DESIRE TO CREATE

‘PERFUME’ OR APPLY ‘AROMATHERAPY’.

INSTEAD, I AM FAR MORE INTERESTED IN HOW A SCENT CAN

TRANSPORT YOU, PERHAPS IMMERSIVELY TO NEW WORLDS,

SCENARIOS, LANDSCAPES.

TRADITIONAL PERFUME MAKING INVOLVES THE TOP, MIDDLE, BASE

NOTE MODEL DESIGNED TO UNRAVEL OVER TIME. HOWEVER, I’M

INTERESTED IN THE POWER OF INDIVIDUAL AROMA MOLECULES

WHICH ARE FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, WAITING THEIR CUE

IN THE QUEUE, RELATIVELY ‘FLAT’ AND CAN THUS BE READ AS MORE

OF A ‘LANDSCAPE’ - A CONTINUOUS, TRUE HORIZON. UPON ENTERING

A ROOM, YOU WOULD EXPERIENCE THEM ‘ACROSS’ WITH NO

PARTICULAR ACCENTS OR MELODY.

I’M OPEN TO BLENDED FRAGRANCES AND ACCORDS IF IT TELLS THE

RIGHT STORY BUT AM CAPTIVATED BY THE ACCAPELLA OF A BIRCH

TAR MOLECULE AND ISO E SUPER OR A X. IN THE SAME WAY ONE CAN

SELECT FROM A PALETTE OF CADMIUM RED, ULTRAMARINE BLUE

AND TITANIUM WHITE AND USE THEM IN ISOLATION AS ONE SCENT -

SO I CAN SELECT FROM THE PERFUMERS PALETTE. FURTHERMORE,

QUASHING THE TABOO AROUND SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES WHICH

SURROUND US EVERY DAY, ARE OFTEN EXTRACTIONS FROM NATURAL

MATERIALS, AND IF NOT ARE MASTERLY CREATIONS BY INVENTIVE

OLFACTORY SCIENTIST.
