SYMPATHETIC SYNTHETICS

BRUNO LATOUR URGES US TO ‘LOVE OUR MONSTERS’

READING FRANKENSTEIN “ NOT AS A CAUTIONARY

TALE AGAINST TECHNO HUBRIS BUT RATHER AGAINST

IRRATIONAL FEARS IN THE FACE OF TECHNOLOGIES SIDE-

AFFECTS. DR FRANKENSTIEN FAILED NOT BECAUSE HE

CREATED A MONSTER BUT BECAUSE HE FLED IN HORROR

INSTEAD OF REPAIRING AND IMPROVING HIM”

.

CAN WE LEARN TO LOVE OUR MONSTERS?

IF MACHINES ARE GIVEN SENSORS TO SENSE - DOES

THAT BRING THEM CLOSE TO BEING HUMAN. IS IT THE

ABILITY TO ‘SENSE’, NOT NECESSARILY TO ‘THINK’ THAT

MAKES US ALIVE? IS IT OUR RESPONSE AND SYMBIOSIS

WITH ENVIRONMENT? I INTEND TO CREATE A FRAGRANCE

THAT AN AI MAY ‘WEAR’ TO MAKE HUMANS FEEL MORE

COMFORTABLE AROUND IT.

WILL LIVING COMPUTERS BECOME AN INTERGRATED PART

OF OUR MAKE UP? PROGRAMMING US WITH DISCRETE

MAGIC, QUIET SUPERHERO CAPABILITIES AND IMAGINED

AESTHETICS? CAN TECHNOLOGY BECOME A BEAUTIFUL

BRIDGE BETWEEN NATURE/S?
